Karthik at a Glance

Karthik is the senior White Lotus figure of Avatar: Seven Havens — the man who does not believe the Avatar has been found in episode 1, is revealed to be a member of the Order of the White Lotus in episode 3, and rises to commander as the season's institutional spine. He is voiced by Akshay Khanna.

Karthik carries the show's backstory: he knows what the records say about the Cataclysm, he knows what the Order has been doing since, and — as episode 5 reveals — he has been keeping a secret about the twins' parents for years.

Karthik's Story So Far (Book One, Episodes 1-6)

Karthik begins the series as the skeptic: when Jae reports finding the Avatar, Karthik dismisses it. Episode 2 shows why he of all people should know better — it is Karthik who explains that recorded history blames Avatar Korra for the Cataclysm. He has spent his life inside the one organization that still believes the Avatar is worth serving, in a world that has decided otherwise.

Episode 3 is his episode: it reveals his membership in the Order of the White Lotus, which continues to train the Avatar in secret, and promotes him to commander. From there he becomes the twins' handler — assigning Daemin to Jae in episode 4, and confining Pavi and Nisha to the Order compound in episode 5 when the Faceless threat makes the streets unsafe.

The same hour breaks his silence about the past: years ago he received a message from the twins' parents and went to the meeting place, where he found only Nisha. He has known the sisters were connected since before either of them could bend a fistful of dirt. In episode 6 the war he has been bracing for arrives at him personally — the entity attacks Karthik, and only the twins bending its energy together saves him.

What Viewers Are Watching in Karthik's Arc

Karthik's secrecy is the season's most debated character choice: how long he has known there were two Avatars, what else the White Lotus knows about the Cataclysm, and whether the order that trains the Avatar can also be wrong about what the Avatar is. His survival after the entity's attack in episode 6 leaves all of those questions live going into the final October episodes.
