What Happens in This Episode — Recap
We meet Pavi as a vagrant surviving inside Ellora, one of the seven havens — the walled cities where what remains of humanity lives, surrounded by a wasteland the show calls the Harshlands. During a festival, she uses earthbending, and a local boy named Jae sees her do it. In this world a bender staying hidden is not paranoia: after the Cataclysm, the Avatar is feared and despised, blamed by history for the world's ruin. Pavi runs — out of the city and into the Harshlands, the one direction nobody sane goes.
Jae follows, and the wasteland nearly kills him for it: he is trapped in a tornado, and Pavi saves his life with airbending — an element no earthbender should touch. That instinctive act is the episode's thesis statement. Whatever Pavi believed she was, she is the Avatar, and now a witness has seen it.
Back in Ellora, Jae tells Karthik he has found the Avatar, and Karthik does not believe him — a beat that tells us how thoroughly the Avatar has passed into myth and nightmare. And in the premiere's final scene, Pavi comes face to face with the season's central mystery in person: a girl who looks exactly like her, who can bend all four elements.
